Taylormade R11S Driver

The TaylorMade R11S Driver is the much anticipated update to the bestselling R11 driver. The new R11S Driver has a deeper face than the R11 with a 460cc head and additional adjustable settings for an even more customized fit. I have gamed the R5, R7, Burner 07, R9 TP and flirted with the R11. For me, nothing comes close to the new R11S. I worried that the R11S would turn out similar to the R9 460 (disappointing), but it surprised me with incredible feel, sneaky distance and more adjustable options than Mr. Potato Head and his bucket of parts.

R11S Driver – Does it move the needle?

At $399 retail and up, TaylorMade has dug out a niche spot that it continues to dominate with the R11S, R11S TP and RocketBallz TP drivers.  Off the shelf, most golfers will not be able to experience the full benefits of this driver. I highly recommend taking this club to a TaylorMade Certified Tuner where you can try different weights in the head, test different settings and experiment with various shafts. Overall, the R11S Driver is yet another clear homerun from TaylorMade.

R11S Driver – Performance

The TaylorMade R11S Driver flat out performs. With up to 80 different combinations available through the different adjustable fitting systems, this driver can be tailored to maximize performance for a wide range of golfers. I had a difficult time hitting the R11 driver consistently, but after tuning this driver, on-course and simulator testing shows that the R11S driver produces more ball speed, is more forgiving and generates more distance than the R11 Driver. The R11S launches lower than the R11 and produces slightly more spin.

The Aldila RIP Phenom shaft is an improvement over last year’s Fujikura Blur, but the results are truly outstanding when the R11S head is paired with aftermarket or TP shaft offerings (i.e. Fubuki Alpha, Rifle Project X Graphite, Matrix RUL). TaylorMade has not put their traditional paint scheme over their premium shaft selections this year and it comes across as a nice change.  I paired the R11S head together with a Project X 7C3 shaft and I have never felt more confident with a driver in my hands.

R11S Driver – Looks/Sound/Feel

Looks

TaylorMade is sticking with a winning formula – the white head is back (the crown now has an R11 logo as the alignment aid rather than the TaylorMade icon featured on the R11 head). The distinctive matte white finish reduces glare, works together with the black face to provide contrast and aids with alignment. The white paint seems to be a topic of debate among golfers, but judging by how many drivers TaylorMade has sold, the vast majority of golfers are on board with the white paint.

Feel

The R11S head has been redesigned with a larger sweet spot and more aerodynamic and forgiving head. It feels smooth and electric when struck properly and is not jarring when hit off center. The ball seems to fly hot off the face of the R11S driver and the sound is not tingy or muted. I experimented with different weights in the head and found a weight combination that increased the swing weight.

R11S Driver – Manufacturer Talk

The new R11S is bigger, faster, longer and more tunable than the original R11 driver. A 460cc matte-white finish head is powered by a new 5-sided ASP plate, new 1.5º FCT sleeve and movable weights. With 3D Tuning, you can independently tune loft, face angle and flight path to your swing.

    • Adjust the loft up or down (±1.5 degrees) with Flight Control Technology (FCT)
    • Adjust the face to one of five angels (±3 degrees) with Adjustable Sole Plate (ASP) Technology
    • Adjust the center of gravity to promote a draw or neutral ball flight with Movable Weight Technology (MWT)
    • Maximum-sized 460cc titanium head with Thick-Thin Crown design for lower CG
    • Inverted Cone Technology (ICT) promotes more ball speed on off-center hits
    • White crown and black face makes alignment easy and eliminates glare on top
